Sika Shear links add strength to church
conversion
Sika shear links installed on a major refurbishment of the former Crookes Valley Methodist Church.in Sheffield.
Sika CarboDur carbon fibre reinforced plates (CFRP) and pre-fabricated SikaCarbo Shear CFRP shear links have recently been installed on a major refurbishment of the former Crookes Valley Methodist Church.in Sheffield Property developers Merlin Estates are converting the building into 22 unique, high quality apartments, and the revised use of the building has subjected the internal reinforced concrete support beams to an increase in shear loadings

Sika A Towering Success In Portsmouth
Sika's Icoment 520 levelling mortar and SikaGard 550W, an elastic, anti carbonation, protective, decorative coating, are being used in the construction of Spinnaker Tower at Portsmouth Harbour.
This required a design solution that would be unobtrusive and increase the shear resistance of the beams without substantially increasing the dead load.
Consultant engineers Capita Symonds in consultation with the Composites Team at Tony Gee and Partners decided upon a combination of Sika CarboDur carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) plates and pre-fabricated SikaCarbo Shear CFRP shear links as the solution.
Post strengthening of concrete structures using Sika's CFRP plates has advantages in contrast to alternative solutions such as steel plates, in being much lighter and smaller, therefore being easier and much faster to apply.
CFRP plates are also corrosion resistant and have excellent fatigue strength characteristics.
These advanced composite materials are part of Sika Limited's proven range of CFRP plates and fabrics designed for such use as flexural strengthening, shear upgrades and column confinement as well as many other uses such as strengthening of cut-outs and repairing structural damage.
Specialist contractor V A Crookes (Contracts) Limited bonded the Sika CarboDur plates linearly to the underside of the floor beams using SikaDur 30, a specially formulated cold cure epoxy adhesive.
This was followed by the bonding of the L shaped CarboShear links at fixed centres along the beam.
The links were fitted in pairs to form a U section around the beam section.
