Sika MonoTop concrete repair for Tower of London
Sika MonoTop concrete repair system was installed by concrete refurbishment specialists Castlework Contractors working for the Tower of London term contractors Sykes and Son .
When the Tower of London needed specialist materials for the repair and refurbishment of one of the drawbridges, Sika were summoned.
The work centred around the entrance structure of the East Drawbridge.
The principal problem was severe degradation of the main supporting beam over the entrance to the 13th Century structure.
The 4m long beam comprises a steel RSJ and cage with a concrete outer casing.
The rusted parts of the RSJ were cleaned bright then treated with Sika MonoTop 610, a cementitious based steel reinforcement primer that contains active corrosion inhibitors providing additional protection.
Repair of the badly cracked and pitted concrete casing was achieved by priming the concrete with Sika MonoTop 610 that also provided a bonding bridge for the application of Sika MonoTop 615.
This is a high build repair and re-profiling mortar especially suitable for overhead and vertical repair work.
Applied by hand, this has produced a cost-effective result that blends well with the surrounding structure.
