Simmtronic has provided an intelligent digital lighting control system for the new hospital at Romford.

The GBP260m PFI hospital is being built by Bovis Lend Lease for Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust and the use of this technology represents a new approach to lighting control within hospitals, providing an opportunity for significant energy saving.

Commissioned by contractor T.Clarke Plc to provide an intelligent digital lighting control system for this large new hospital, Simmtronic has taken on some design responsibility for engineering a high-reliability system capable of delivering this complex project whilst providing the energy efficiency demanded.

As part of the lighting control scheme, dimming functions have been widely employed throughout the hospital - in both wards and consulting rooms.

Simmtronic has also designed and supplied a special lighting control interface with the nurse call system to provide patients with a personal bedhead control featuring on/off and dimming functions.

The extensive use of presence detection in non-clinical areas will deliver energy savings by ensuring lights are automatically switched off when these locations are unoccupied.

Romford's new state-of-the art healthcare facility will have a large cancer and renal dialysis unit and comprise over 4800 rooms in a 1 million sq.ft.building with a footprint the size of 12 football pitches.

The ground and first floors are being dedicated to outpatient services and A and E.

Inpatient accommodation will be provided in circular towers with a total of 939 beds in 4-bed wards and single rooms.

This circular design shortens movement distances for both staff and patients.

Simmtronic has provided T.Clarke with a highly effective lighting control system which combined with the modular power distribution system has made installation and commissioning quick and simple.
