Silcock Dawson of Bristol has played an instrumental role in developing the first hotel to seek the Gold standard from the Green Tourism Board

With a wealth of knowledge in sustainability, the Bristol office of national building services engineering consultants Silcock Dawson was appointed by Cadbury House Hotel to support its drive in further developing its green credentials As part of a significant refurbishment, Silcock Dawson provided key, strategic advice to the region's premier hotel, health club and spa which included many energy saving options

From light sensitive switches, thermostat temperature control and 'heat recovery' facilities on air handling units to instant hot water systems and low water content cisterns, every aspect of the hotel has been considered.

"The Green Tourism Business scheme is extremely comprehensive," explains Dominic Anderson, Associate for Silcock Dawson, "and a number of significant changes were required to bring the hotel up to its very high standard.

The hotel owners are very committed to the environment and the impact the hotel has on it and, as a consequence, they have worked incredibly hard in order to be considered for this prestigious award".

The Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) has been set up to encourage the preservation of the country's natural assets and awards businesses involved in tourism with either a gold, silver or bronze accreditation which allows the business in question to market itself as being environmentally responsible.

The level of accreditation is based on the implementation of environmental measures that are connected to business activities.

These include categories such as water issues, waste minimisation, wildlife and landscape, energy saving and transport.

"It's not surprising that the leisure industry is switching on to the green agenda," continues Anderson.

"As a differentiator in a crowded market place sustainability is significant.

We have seen many market sectors starting to appreciate that green initiatives can, in many instances, reduce costs, streamline processes and provide greater efficiencies across the board".

Determined to set the standard for others in the hotel and conference sector to follow, Cadbury House Hotel was determined from the outset to partner with businesses that could support the initiative going forward.

"Silcock Dawson has a vast amount of experience in energy and sustainability, and as a consequence the company was a perfect match to support us in our endeavours to submit an entry to GTBS" explains Nick Taplin, Managing Director of Cadbury House Hotel, Health Club and Spa.
