Building services contractor Skerritt has strengthened its presence in the education construction sector, with a contract nearing completion on The Becket School in Nottingham.

Building services installation, maintenance and property care contractor Skerritt has almost completed the GBP3.8m contract which has consisted of a 52-week programme of electrical and mechanical works at the new 12,000sqm school.

The contract, for main contractors Rok Building, is due to be delivered in July 2009 and forms part of Skerritt's GBP12m programme of education works for 2007-8, which include Nottingham University's Jubilee Campus and the Leicester Grammar School.

Construction of the newly amalgamated, voluntary-aided Roman Catholic school, on Wilford Lane in Wilford, is the culmination of 10 years of planning.

Due to open in September 2009 and designed by Horsley Huber Architects, the new building will bring together upper and lower schools that until now have operated on two sites set a mile-and-a-half apart.

Skerritt CEO Martyn Horton commented: "This project is further evidence of Skerritt's growing reputation in the education construction sector and underlines the company's successful partnership approach with Rok Building and other major construction companies".

Skerritt is providing all mechanical and electrical services in the 1,050-place secondary school.

It includes a sophisticated building energy management system, designed by consulting engineers Couch Perry Wilkes that features a rainwater harvesting system with a 25,000 litre underground storage tank, used for toilet flushing, and a small-scale woodchip fuel boiler.

The system has been designed for use as a teaching resource.

Work also features security access control doors and a wireless alerter system, a mixed-mode heat-recovery ventilation system and thermal insulation.

The contract includes work on 60 classrooms, science laboratories, a technical workshop area, assembly hall, sports and admin facilities and a chapel.
