The Co-operative and project partner Solarcentury challenges big business and the Government to help fit every school in the UK with a green energy source by 2020.
The system can be retrofitted or integrated into any shelter design, using solar, LED and battery technology, providing a safe, instantly illuminated shelter all year round.
Each system saves 50kg of CO2 emissions per year.
By 2005 solarcentury will have installed more than 1,000 shelters in eleven UK cities.
As well as being a good green credential for councils, the avoidance of grid connection costs, cabling and lower maintenance saves councils approximately £400 per shelter per year.
Judges awarded the prize to solarcentury because of their contribution to innovating the bus environment whilst saving money in the process with this sustainable product.
Simon Gerrard, streetsmarts Sales Manager at solarcentury said: "This is fantastic recognition of how streetsmart can help create a secure environment for bus users".
" With safer bus shelters, more people should be encouraged to use this public transport, thereby reducing congestion and the amount of air pollution caused by vehicle emissions".
Plymouth City Council led the way by installing 330 streetsmart systems in 2003.
Since then, solarcentury have received widespread interest for the product across Europe, US, and Asia Pacific markets.
The Bus Industry Award was the fourth award that solarcentury won in one month.
The organisation also scooped three awards in the Treasury-sponsored Inner City 100 Awards.
