Solarcentury, the UK's leading solar energy company, has joined forces with Hammerson UK Properties to install 494 solar panels into the roof of the new Bishops Square development in Spitalfields.

solarcentury, the UK's leading solar energy company, has joined forces with Hammerson UK Properties to install 494 solar panels into the roof of the new Bishops Square development in Spitalfields The photovoltaic (PV) installation, which is the first of its kind with 'the square mile', was supported by a GBP180,000 grant from the DTI's Major Demonstration Programme

Hammerson UK Properties, Fosters and Partners and Sir Robert McAlpine worked with solarcentury, the UK's leading solar energy company, to install photovoltaics (PV) on the Bishop's Square development in Spitalfields, London City.

solarcentury provided specialised PV knowledge and design expertise to develop an optimal, cost effective solution.

The PV replaced louvres that were included in the original design, to provide the added benefit of shading to the plant deck area.

Jeremy Leggett, CEO of solarcentury, commented: "This installation, which is the first of its kind anywhere within the square mile, highlights the viability of photovoltaics as a practical urban energy source".

"Almost every new development project has the potential to incorporate some renewable energy generation and hopefully Hammerson's project will encourage others to follow suit." "Communicating the benefits of renewable energy is essential to their proliferation and the bespoke display unit at Spittalfields should really help the buildings occupants and the public understand what a valuable installation this is".

solarcentury design and install solar energy systems for commercial developers, house builders, private industries and the public sector with projects ranging from one off grid stand-alone systems, to fully building integrated solutions.

Since 1999 solarcentury have helped more organisations reduce their carbon dioxide emissions using solar energy than any other UK company.

The future looks bright for solarcentury, who were recently listed as the 25th fastest growing technology company in the UK by the Times newspaper.

Their all new C21e tile, now in its second iteration, is designed specifically to replace conventional roofing tiles and strengthens their track record of introducing and developing new products and technologies to the UK PV market.
