Solarcentury's CompleteSolarRoof system is being used, along with other sustainable technologies, at NU@D2, a groundbreaking new development from Barratt homes in Upton, Northampton.

The 165 homes development combines renewable technologies with sustainable design, and unique landscaping to provide a sustainable way of life These ecologically sound features have been enough to secure NU@D2 an "Eco Excellent" rating with the EcoHomes Standard, the highest possible rating

The CompleteSolarRoof consists of Solar Century's C21e solar photovoltaic panels for electricity generation, and the company's C21t solar thermal tiles for water heating.

Both tiles are "integrated tiles," replicating the appearance of traditional roof tiles and providing easy of installation for any roofer.

The tiles replace four traditional tiles, and are attached to roof battens in the conventional manner.

A typical CompleteSolarRoof can supply over 60% of the hot water requirements for a three bedroom home, and generate 100kWh of electricity per year, per m2.

This can amount to 50% of the electrical needs of a three bedroom household, with excess electricity being sold back to the grid during low electricity use periods.

Not only does this system reduce a homes carbon emissions by providing clean energy, it also protects the occupants against rising fuel prices, enabling them to take a large proportion of their energy generation needs into their own hands.

NU@D2 consists of a combination of one and two bedroom apartments, and two, three, four and five bedrooms houses, across two, three and four storeys.

The development is based on the emerging residential planning philosophy of New Urbanism, which is proving popular in the USA.

Based on sustainability and community, the focus of New Urbanism falls on energy efficient housing and providing local everyday amenities for residents.

As well as the CompleteSolarRoof, NU@D2 implements water butts, Green Roofs and a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS), which further helps the environment.

In addition, all homes are equipped with energy efficient boilers.
