The traction system will be changed significantly, upgrading the 1960s 25 kV classic electrification system to a 25-0-25 kV autotransformer (AT) system.

SCADA will control a number of new trackside traction substations; these locations will be integrated into the Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) electrification system, which must remain operational throughout the upgrade.

Consequently much of the Power Supply Upgrade work will take place on or next to a fully operational high speed a.c.

electrified railway, although the SCADA works will be mostly within substation buildings or Electrical Control Rooms.

Harker area comprises substation sites, from Great Strickland to Carstairs, along the West Coast Main Line.

Work will be associated primarily with Boundary sites where control is from the Transmitton SCADA master station control system at Cathcart.
