BP is investigating the role daylighting can play in reducing CO2 emissions at its UK retail sites.

17 Solatube daylighting systems were installed as part of a trial at BP's site in Childs Way, in Milton Keynes, in the retail and back office areas This means that during daylight hours there is no need to use electricity for lighting in these sections of the premises

Jason McMenamin, BP's maintenance co-ordinator comments: "Installing the Solatubes has the potential to help us to reduce our carbon footprint".

"In addition, the use of daylight rather than electric light creates a better place for our customers to shop and our staff to work".

The Solatube daylighting system comprises a dome fitted to the roof, which actively harvests daylight to optimise the amount of light that is transmitted through a highly reflective, rigid tube and diffused into the space below.

The reflective material used is 99.7% reflective, enabling it to deliver more light from roof to room than any other tubular daylighting system, and up to ten times more than systems using flexible tubes.

Key facts:.

* Lighting typically accounts for some 40% of annual utility costs in commercial applications.

* According to research carried out at the University of Nebraska, poor lighting in the workplace can lead to excessive sick days, worker discontent, high staff turnover rates and poor-quality work.

Whilst natural lighting makes workers feel and work better, helps people retain what they have learned and boosts productivity.

* A utility company reported that after upgrading their buildings to use more daylight, absenteeism rates dropped by 25%.

* A retailer which lit two-thirds of its stores with daylight determined that these stores had 40% higher sales.

* At a shopping mall in Pennsylvania, US, footfall increased by over 30% and retailers' sales increased by 38% following improvements to its lighting including increased use of daylighting.
