Socomec Sicon UPS recently installed a comprehensive solution to back the power supply at the new Met Office HQ building, at Exeter.

The company supplied 24 of its latest UPS modules, systems ranging from 40-400kVA, configured with 2 x 0200 central by-pass cabinets into 8 separate systems.

The Met Office is one of the world's leading providers of environmental and weather-related services.

Its solutions and services meet the needs of the general public, government and schools, through broadcasters and online media, to civil aviation and almost every other industry sector both in the UK and around the world.

When the company relocated to its new Exeter HQ, it commissioned Socomec became closely involved in theto design and development of the finalultimate power solution for its key load centres, including two supercomputers, together with key communications and mechanical services.

Socomec won the contract in a competitive market place and developed a close working relationship with both the projects' M and E Contractor, Haden Young, and the design consultants Zisman Bowyer and Partners.

The choice of Socomecchose redundant systems with common by pass provides high MTBF and low MTTR figures.

The Company contributed design implementation and development services and managed the installation and final commissioning of the UPS systems over a long build and commissioning period.

For critical supplies to the supercomputers, the Socomec common by pass approach, with theits inherent high short circuit current capability, provided ZBP with flexibility when developing the protection discrimination settings for the power distribution system.

The UPS equipment on site includeincluded 15 x 400 kVA Delphys UPS - to back the super-computer supplies and associated room air conditioning as well as the critical mechanical services together with 9 Digys modules.; Two Delphys 2000 Central bypass cabinets for the two supercomputers each configure 6 x 400 kVA modules.

Redundant configurations, 3 x 20kVA Digys, supplyfor the critical communications links with 2 independent redundant systems, each of 3 x 40kVA Digys, to supply the critical load distribution in the main work areas.

All Socomec UPS systems combine high performance with low harmonic feedback, are extremely safe and flexible and meet all the relevant European standards.
