An unusually designed entrance canopy was recently completed by Solaglas Contracting for Portchester Community School in Portmouth.

The 62m2 canopy was awarded by specialist steelwork contractor Maldon Marine of Essex and designed by Stephens Cox Associates.

Local branch, Solaglas Portsmouth Glass and Glazing were approached to provide a glazing and fixing solution that would meet the architect's design criteria for overhead glazing incorporating a steel support structure.

To meet the customers brief for security, safety as well as aesthetic considerations, Solaglas proposed the use of an SGG Spider Glass bolted system.

Glazing specified was SGG STADIP laminated glass incorporating an outer pane of 12mm high mechanical performance SGG SECURIPOINT with a 1.52mm pvb interlayer and an inner pane of 8mm heat strengthened SGG PLANIDUR.

Produced locally, the canopy delivered to site consisted of 28 separate pieces in various shapes and sizes to follow the contours of the curved design.

Through meticulous planning and setting, the panels fitted exactly into place over each spider bolt positioned on the steelwork before being siliconed for weatherproofing.
