Solaglas have made a significant contribution to one of Europe's first earthship projects by providing their high performance glass solutions.

Saint-Gobain Solaglas have recently made a significant contribution to one of Europe's first earthship projects by providing their high performance glass solutions.

These revolutionary structures are buildings that do not require connection with utilities as they are able to service their own needs by using natural elements.

They heat, cool and power themselves, harvest their own water and even deal with their own waste ! After building in places as far-reaching as Japan and Bolivia, Mike Reynolds, an environmental architect and designer of the earthship projects has come to Brighton to offer his expertise and experience to the project.

In order to maximise the warming effect of the sun, the earthship was designed with oversize windows.

Another key design feature is the combined use of tyres and earth to make the walls of the structure, which then work to store the heat.

To ensure optimum thermal insulation, high performance SGG Planitherm Futur N low-e units with SGG Swisspacer warm edge spacer bars were manufactured at Solaglas Canterbury and installed by Solaglas Dartford.

Building began in April 2003 and is sill going strong and more earthship projects are planned in the UK.
