Luna and Spa on a roll

A Spa Laminates product story

Using a single elliptical component manufactured by Spa Laminates, formed by their specialist division utilising veneers and plywood layers, innovative young designer Tim Forrester's Luna furniture range is heading for a starring role in many people's living rooms and bedrooms.

Luna was voted a runner-up finalist in the 2005 British Interior Design Awards for Best Furniture Product of the Year and it's easy to see why.

A design that's unusual and clever, the range comprises 12 different pieces of furniture.

Custom built to order, the products include seating, lighting, storage and tables all produced from the same ellipse, the only difference being that elements are added (e.g a light source, back rest etc) or taken away as necessary.

Spa worked closely with Tim Forrester to create the elliptical forms.

Says Tim: "Spa is one of the few UK companies that can produce custom curved veneered panels that are affordable and produced to exceptional standards".

The Luna drawer units consist of the elliptical horizontal pod on legs with a drawer front, and there's also a glass top drawer unit; there are wall mounted storage pods; and Luna Stacs (two or three) which can store quite heavy objects like wine bottles, or bulky objects like clothing.

The Luna Roca is a rocking seat; while the Luna Snake, consisting of wall mounted veneered wood snaking along the wall, is great for books and CD's.

Finally there's a Luna lamp stand and an uplighter, both with polished aluminium bases.

The full range is offered in a choice of ash, cherry, ebony, walnut and zebrano veneers.

Tim Forrester is 28 and based in South Wales.

He says he loves to design products that have a variety of uses.

Tim is also a part-time lecturer at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.

Its website www.veneerselector.com features over 150 veneers and is an essential tool for architects and designers.

Spa is exhibiting at the Surface Design Show on Stand 394 (1-2 March) at the Business Design Centre, London.
