Spectrum Design has been recognised by the Blue Ridge chapter of the American Institute of Architects and Downtown Roanoke for its renovations of the General Francis Marion Hotel in Marion.

Spectrum Design was recently recognised by the Blue Ridge chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Downtown Roanoke for its renovations of the General Francis Marion Hotel in Marion and three downtown Roanoke projects - State and City Building, Campbell Garage Lofts and Candy Factory Lofts.

The architecture and engineering firm received a Special Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation from AIA Blue Ridge for its work on the General Francis Marion Hotel at the organisation's Design Awards banquet on May 24 at the Jefferson centre.

The Design Awards recognise excellence in architectural design by firms and individuals, and entries were judged by AIA members in Alexandria.

Spectrum Design's nearly two-year, $4 million project updated the hotel's heating, cooling and electrical systems and upgraded its amenities, such as wireless Internet and handicap-accessibility, while retaining its 1920s ambience.

Downtown Roanoke honoured three Spectrum Design projects with its Golden Trowel Awards on May 24 at the Hotel Roanoke - the State and City Building, Campbell Garage Lofts and Candy Factory Lofts.

The Golden Trowel Awards acknowledge significant investments in downtown Roanoke, and six projects were recognised.

Spectrum Design provided architectural and engineering design services on the eight-story renovation of the State and City Building, which expanded the first-floor retail space of Frank L.

Moose Jewelers and transformed the remaining floors into high-end condominiums, including office condos on the second floor.

The firm provided engineering services for the Campbell Garage Lofts and Candy Factory Lofts.
