Sprunt has appointed contractor Benson to help carry out a £3.5m expansion and upgrade to Linden Lodge School for visually impaired (VI) and multi-disabled VI children, in Wimbledon, London.

Specialists in urban and property renewal strategies, London-based architects Sprunt has appointed contractor Benson to help carry out a £3.5m expansion and upgrade to Linden Lodge School for visually impaired (VI) and multi-disabled VI children, in Wimbledon, south-west London Currently on site, Sprunt is building a new residential block for 36 students, in addition to remodelling existing buildings

Centred around a Lutyens-designed house with adjoining Jekyll garden, works also include installing lifts for children with multiple disabilities and limited mobility.

The new block will include one and two-bedroom accommodation, together with dedicated recreational and social areas, designed to complement the existing Lutyens house across a grass square, with a less formal landscaped area and wildlife trail at the rear.

"We are creating an exciting new-build residential unit, as well as a remodelled curricular provision in order to give students full access to all the facilities," said Tony Henson, associate at Sprunt.

"Underpinning the project is a team dedicated to producing a building that works for everyone who uses it." Sprunt is also converting one of the existing residential buildings for teaching use, while some of the classrooms are to be remodelled to help deliver a specialised curriculum.

The new build will be completed before work starts to the existing buildings.

One of the main areas to be addressed since work on site began is the pupils' reaction to the changes.

"The pupils are walked around the site on a one-to-one basis to feel the new surfaces and revised position of things, until the changes have been learnt," explained head teacher Roger Legate.

"Work in the existing buildings will be done in phases, with designated areas screened off.

The pupils will be taught the changes every time an area is cordoned off so they are not disturbed or disorientated by the work.

As head teacher, I am delighted and proud of what has been achieved so far." The only school of its type to offer residential care, Linden Lodge School is maintained by Wandsworth LEA and caters for VI children from four to 19 years.

Furthermore, it specialises in the teaching of VI children with autism.

Supporting students from 34 LEA's across the south east of England, it is now proposed to increase pupil capacity from 90 to 95, of which 47 places will be residential.

Rob Leitch, managing director, Benson South East, added: "The Linden Lodge contract further endorses our close working relationship with Sprunt and Wandsworth Borough Council.

And our experience in working on projects of this type means the school can be assured of minimum disruption whilst we are on site.".
