Sprunt, specialists in urban and property renewal strategies, has completed 01zero-one, an exciting and innovative self-contained Creative Learning Lab for media students in Peter Street, Soho.

As part of a three-year framework agreement with Westminster Kingsway College, London-based architects Sprunt, specialists in urban and property renewal strategies, has completed 01zero-one, an exciting and innovative self-contained Creative Learning Lab for media students in Peter Street, Soho.

The project, which took twelve weeks to complete, is set to make an important contribution to skills development in London's digital media.

Working on a very restricted inner-city site, Sprunt has cleverly transformed several redundant classrooms in to a vibrant venue featuring television studio, control room together with digital editing suites and individual workstations.

The architects have imaginatively rationalised the college's basement space enclosing parts of the outside of the building with the inside, via a new glazed roof and entrance area.

"Working in a tight basement with low ceilings can be quite a challenge," pointed out Nick Brealey, associate, Sprunt.

"Not only did we have to reconcile the different levels of floors, but specifying the correct acoustic paneling to ensure adequate soundproofing whilst keeping the outside traffic noise to a minimum was obviously of paramount importance." 01zero-one is new for the TV, film and new media industries and is available for private hire, short courses, workshops, talks, events and showcases.

Key partners and supporters include London Development Agency, BBC, Channel 4, Skillset and the Learning and Skills Council.

Under the rolling programme of improvements, Sprunt has already enhanced reception areas in all seven of the College's centres in north, central and south London, as well as having re-designed and refurbished its Vincent Square restaurants.

Works to introduce a mezzanine floor to the Grade2* listed library creating a new learning resource centre at the college's Vincent Square campus, has recently been completed.
