Residential care home to receive 3.3m GBP modernisation programme

In a pledge by the Department of Health to provide 979 extra care homes for older people and learning disabled adults across England, London-based architects Sprunt, specialists in urban and property renewal strategies has been granted planning permission to create 35 extra care flats with support facilities at residential care home, Mora Burnet House in Swiss Cottage, north-west London for SPH Housing, part of the Origin Group.

Works to 1970s built Mora Burnet House include the introduction of a new floor at roof level to accommodate the 35 flats as well as improved communal facilities and refurbishment of the building's main entrance and facade to provide a more modern, welcoming environment.

Mora Burnet House is one of the first extra care housing projects of its kind in the London Borough of Camden.

Such projects are designed to support independent living, encouraging older people to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.

It takes in to account the population's anticipated longer life expectancy by providing older people with their own homes and necessary care and support, tailored to the individual's needs.

"Extra care housing is an interesting initiative that touches us all in one way or another," pointed out Ken Hughes, director, Sprunt.

"There certainly are satisfying challenges in creating accommodation that can provide a personable and less institutionalised feel, whilst still providing discreet support." New internal design ideas and details are included in the GBP 3.3 million modernisation programme which is due to start on site this autumn.
