Green roofs have been installed on a ground-breaking development of new affordable homes in Hereford to help cut the cost of living in them.

The four houses developed for Herefordshire Housing off Kilvert Road, Newton Farm, have roofs planted with sedum, a low maintenance plant, to boost insulation This will cut heating costs for homeowners, provide protection from UV light, manage rainwater more effectively than a traditional roof, reduce noise pollution and serve as a haven for wildlife

The GBP500,000 development on the site of former derelict garages was made possible by Spectrum Development Partnership - of which Herefordshire Housing is a part - a consortium of 10 West Midlands housing associations dedicated to delivering more than 1,000 new affordable homes in the region each year.

"Many of the design features are a first in Herefordshire and we hope will act as a benchmark for other developments," said Martin Smith, of Herefordshire Housing.

"The development demonstrates our commitment to invest in an area where options for any regeneration are limited.

It proves that housing providers can always consider innovative ways of improving eco-ratings whatever their size." The two and three-bedroom homes, which have been let to local people, were designed by DJD Architects, of Worcester, and constructed by Hydes Building Contractors, of Kington, with GBP268,000 grant support from the Housing Corporation.

Kathryn Robb, business development manager with Worcestershire-based Spectrum Development Partnership, said; "Our aim is to deliver high-quality, affordable homes in areas where people want to live across the West Midlands region.

"Herefordshire Housing has helped create an innovative solution to tackle local housing need".

Residents and representatives from Herefordshire Housing and the Spectrum Development Partnership gathered at the site this week to mark the completion of the building work.

All the homes have been rented to people who were in the local housing register.
