High performance steel windows are being supplied by Metal Casements Ltd, a member of the Steel Window Association (SWA), to upgrade and restore the fenestration at Hill House in Hampstead.

Defined both by its location and the Modern Movement leanings of its designer, Hill House in Hampstead has been reborn through the meticulous work of a contemporary architectural practice, with high performance steel windows being supplied by a member of the Steel Window Association (SWA) to upgrade and restore the fenestration Avanti Architects has led the work to remodel the complex residence, built on an elevated site during the late 1930's by Oliver Hill, a contemporary of Le Corbusier

Metal Casements Limited has been the specialist supplier of W40 units for the work, producing curved on plan and other special frames for work on three of the four levels of accommodation.

Used to fabricate both doorsets and many large size windows, the W40 system permits specifiers an unrivalled combination of strength and slenderness; maximising spans as well as light transmission while offering enhanced thermal performance and excellent security.

Metal Casements' package included one composite measuring 1790mm x 4115mm made up in seven sections with transomers, all curved on plan.

There are also three sets of windows at ground floor level measuring 1500mm high and 1850mm wide, with French casements in the middle.

This arrangements is repeated at the semi-basement level.

All of these feature pressed metal sills with built-in condensation channels.

The stair tower contains steel framed ribbon windows while the W40 system was again used to fabricate a 90-degree corner window in a downstairs cloakroom where the 1100mm and 600mm long legs, both 650mm high, feature a glass to glass joint.

Project Architect, Amir Ramezani, comments: "This is an historically important building which had suffered unsympathetic additions and alterations during the 1960's including the replacement of almost all the original steel windows using an aluminium system.

"From archive drawings fro 1938 we were able to liaise with the fabricator to restore much of the original fenestration pattern.

We are particularly pleased with the rolled, curved windows, while using low-E glass and argon filling has enabled a good standard of thermal performance to be achieved." All the frames have been hot dip galvanized and finished in a RAL 7035 matt grey polyester powder coat.

While the 24mm double glazed units contain either 4.0mm or 6.0mm toughened and laminated glass, variations in opening lights include vertical pivots, top hung and side hung.

A Specifiers Guide and list of Members is available from the Steel Window Association.
