Steel windows for modern apartment building
Architects of an acclaimed new apartment building in London have utilised the strength and style of steel to create a striking screen enclosing its circulation areas.
Steel Window Association member company, Steel Window Service was the specialist contractor chosen to supply and install a series of doors, windows and screens that articulate the interior spaces and fill them with light.
Paul Stevenson comments: "Both the clients and myself were keen on keeping the 'essence' of the old print building, including the W20 steel windows bringing in lots of light.
"There is also a three sided lightwell at the centre of the floorplan and we decided to utilise this area as a link between the master bedroom and the main living space and we did this using two glazed doors.
Steel windows are integral to the building's past and to the future that we have created from it".
Steel Window Service's contract was carried out during a 15 month period as the refurbishment progressed.
Having carefully surveyed each of the openings, the manufacturer utilised W20 sections to assemble the new frames, which were finished in a dark grey polyester powder coat.
They were glazed using 14 mm sealed units containing a mixture of clear toughened, laminated and acid etched, Pilkington Optiflow Satin.
Doors were produced for the main front entrance, the rear exit onto a service alleyway as well as the featured three-sided courtyard that serves as a lightwell.
The scope of the work also included the in-situ refurbishment of some of the original windows contained in the front elevation to Pember House.
A guide to steel windows and list of members is available from The Steel Window Association.
