The refurbishment and remodelling of a London apartment has provided the opportunity for a member of the Steel Window Association to demonstrate the aesthetic versatility of this most rugged of window framing materials.
Steel Window Service and Supplies has worked in close cooperation with David Scott Architects to design, fabricate and finish a large internal room screen, used to divide the kitchen of the Baker Street property from the main living area.
The screen is 4.5 metres long and 2.3 metres high, with a pair of double doors.
Unusually the client and her consultant were keen to see the metal employed in its raw state, to match the treatment given to the inner surface of the building's original steel frames.
Project Architect, David Scott explains: "We have been involved as architects in remodelling several of these 1930s apartments near to Baker Street Station and this particular client wanted something special done to her flat.
The existing windows look like old universal suite style units similar to a W20 section.
We suggested stripping them back to bare metal and lacquering the surface so that we got a sharp contrast with the white walls.
"It actually worked very well with the dark frames standing out as sharp holes against the walls; giving an industrial aesthetic to the interior.
I have worked with Steel Window Services in the past and I approached them to provide a screen that would continue this theme.
We wiped the face of the steel over with a corrosion inhibitor which had the effect of darkening them and then applied the lacquer to protect them.
The finished effect with the white etched glass looks very appropriate and the client is delighted.
All credit to Steel Windows for a fine job." A guide to steel windows and list of members is available free from the Steel Window Association.
