Steel windows for modern apartment building
Architects of an acclaimed new apartment building in London have utilised the strength and style of steel to create a striking screen enclosing its circulation areas.
The property is in fact one of the most highly regarded of those designed by the architect, R.H.Williams across Hampstead Garden Suburb.
The owner commented: "The house dates from the late 1930s and the original window frames were very much at the end of their life, many being badly corroded".
"Their replacement had to be on a like-for-like basis and the local conservation group, the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust recommended Steel Window Services as one of the specialist contractors capable of carrying out the work".
"The project has progressed very well and I am very happy with the service I received from the company".
Where it was possible to save the existing frames, Steel Window Service and Supplies removed all of the old paint and products of corrosion to reveal bare metal.
Frame sections were then either repaired or new pieces welded in place while the hinges, handles and other ironmongery were all replaced.
The leaded lights were also restored before being re-glazed into the frames which are treated with galvanizing paint and two finish coats.
New windows were produced where necessary utilising SMW sections as the closest possible match for the fenestration of the period.
These are hot dip galvanized and finished with a polyester powder coat, and contain reproduction leaded lights to help maintain the traditional styling of this distinctive house.
Steel Window Service and Supplies also supplied new oak sub-frames where appropriate.
