Steel windows for historic Irish castle

A Steel Window Association product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Apr 16, 2008

A member of the Steel Window Association has supplied and fitted replica EB24 steel windows at Dunboy Castle, Castletownbere, Cork in Ireland.

Dunboy Castle, Castletownbere, Cork in Ireland was the site of a famous siege in 1602 when Irish rebels held out bravely for 11 days against a much greater English army sent by Queen Elizabeth.

During a visit in the 1930's it is said that Daphne DuMarier described Dunboy as "Ireland's most beautiful ruin".

The castle has been restored and redeveloped by Capella Hotels to establish a lavish facility with every amenity and has already been called Ireland's first 6 star hotel.

SWA member, the fifth generation family firm Clement Steel Windows, manufactured over 200 EB24 steel windows, polyester powder coated in a black semi gloss including special antique type fittings for added authenticity.

All the windows have been fitted directly into stonework.

The EB24 replica windows were specified because they provide the aesthetic qualities required for a project of this type and also the high performance demanded by today's clients.

Main Contractor Hegarty worked closely with RKD Architects to produce a sensitive refurbishment at what is one of the country's most famous ancient monuments.

Noel Clancy Hegarty's Contract Manager said "the windows are fantastic, they look just right in this building".

"We've been highly pleased with Clement's performance throughout a very challenging job".

A guide to steel windows and list of members is available free from the Steel Window Association, tel: 020 7637 3571, e-mail: info@steel-window-association.co.uk, or look at the website.
