The potent combination of traditional skills and modern technology will be the theme of a CPD seminar aimed at architects, designers, clients, surveyors and engineers during this year's Natural Stone Show.
"Stone in the City" takes place at London's Excel Centre on the morning of March 15.
It is organised by Stone Federation Great Britain and is registered for RIBA/CPD points.
Places cost £20 each (+ VAT) and include lunch in the Stone Federation Village, which is a central feature of this year's show.
Tickets are available from the Stone Federation, telephone 01303 856123 or e-mail Sandra@stone-federationgb.org.uk.
The Federation's director Jane Buxey explained: "The natural stone industry has made enormous strides in the use of computerisation in recent years".
""Combined with their extensive knowledge of traditional skills this means that stone experts have much to offer in the early planning stages of a project.
"They can advise on design, processing, production and the cost effectiveness of stone, as well as its suitability for the required purpose." The seminar begins at 11 am and speakers include Stone in the City chairman David Richardson, Senior Vice President of the Stone Federation.
David, who is with BRE, will illustrate how the specialist stone contractor's involvement at the early stages can assist the architect in the set up process.
He will also offer advice on the technical aspects involved.
Eric Parry, principal of Eric Parry Architects, will talk about "Stone - Ancient and Modern" and John Bysouth, the Stone Federation's technical adviser will offer guidance on selecting the type of natural stone to be used in a project.
Bruno Miglio, director of Arup Materials will discuss "A consultant's experience of imported and indigenous stones".
Areas covered during the seminar include: the choice of a specialist contractor, factors affecting specifications and the aesthetic appeal of various stones.
All are vital ingredients in choosing the right stone for the job.
Environmental issues, maintenance, design factors, technological advances and energy efficiency will also be discussed during the seminar, which does qualify for CPD credits.
