Building of a new permanent exhibition museum in Lincoln has earned a Chesterfield company a prestigious commendation for its involvement in the supply of natural stone.

The building of a new permanent exhibition museum in Lincoln has earned a Chesterfield company a prestigious commendation for its involvement in the supply of natural stone Realstone Limited is based in Wingerworth in Chesterfield and has been 'highly commended' in the 'New Build with load bearing stone category' of the Natural Stone Awards for the year 2006

Realstone supplied Ancaster Weatherbed stone from its Lincolnshire quarry, for use on the City and County Museum in Lincoln.

Six hundred and fifty square metres of flooring stone in mixed colours and 750 square metres of blue and beige walling stone was supplied.

"Much effort went into the design by architects, Panter Hudspith, to get the feeling of the building".

"Stone contractors, JW Smith and Realstone liaised extensively to enable building, on a very tight site, to continue to a reasonably short programme," said Clinton Haigh, technical sales manager of Realstone Limited.

"The net result is a building that the judges thought 'comes to life through the variety of finishes'".

"Realstone is immensely proud to have been given the trust and opportunity to carry out this significant project".

Also known as 'The Collection', the museum was a joint venture between Lincoln City Council and Lincolnshire County Council.

It includes a permanent exhibition gallery for the city's extensive archaeology collection, displaying a selection of artefacts that cover 300,000 years of history; a temporary gallery showing visiting contemporary art and archaeological exhibitions; an orientation hall; an audio visual theatre; educational areas and public amenities.

Organised by the Stone Federation Great Britain, the Natural Stone Awards are the stone industry's showcase event and celebrate the very best architecture using natural stone products.

The awards were announced at a ceremony hosted by Jim Rosenthal and Tommy Walsh at London's Millennium Hotel.

This is the thirteenth time the Stone Federation Great Britain has organised the biennial Natural Stone Awards which reflect the versatility of natural stone in modern building and design.
