Solar tiles get safe transport
Scott Timber Group has helped one of the UK's leading distributors of solar roofing tiles to prevent thousands of pounds worth of stock damage.
With solar power set to be a significant energy source within new homes, the Scott Timber Group has helped one of the UK's leading distributors of solar roofing tiles to prevent thousands of pounds worth of stock damage.
At a cost of around GBP250 per tile, and with over 4000 used in the average new estate, the transportation of the Marley Roofing SolarTile carried the potential nightmare of costly stock damage with current methods of packaging proving unsuitable for the delicate tiles.
That's when UK roofing specialist Marley Roofing called in Scott Timber, which has provided the pallets to safely transport the company's roofing tiles and materials for the last nine years.
Scott Packaging, the newly re-branded name of Group member Combine Packaging, was able to employ its expertise to create an innovative solution.
This utilised a plywood case with inset rigid foam which allowed the SolarTiles to slot in like a record sleeve.
Static and drop tests confirmed the packaging could ensure the pristine condition of the tiles on arrival.
It's a solution that could not be better timed with new legislation stipulating that solar panels must be incorporated into new housing to assist in clean energy production at a time of ever increasing demand.
Scott Packaging also ensured the solution was cost efficient by making it reusable as well as designing it so that Marley Roofing could include company branding on the side and use the packaging as a promotions tool.
Joe Fox, Commodity Manager for Marley Roofing, said: "Solar tiles carry a host of benefits, including no CO2 emissions, so at a time of increased energy demand and greater sensitivities towards the environment solar power has enormous potential.
"When we started looking at how we would transport such a specialized product nothing on the market gave us the confidence that the SolarTile would arrive safely.
Scott Packaging came in and built a solution that was tailored to our specific needs." Since supplying Marley with pallets nine years ago, Scott Timber has helped transport enough tiles to roof 750,000 houses.
Scott Packaging is now extending the successful partnership by supporting Marley Roofing's work to build the next generation of houses.
Chris Hatton, Commercial Director of Scott Packaging, said: "Marley Roofing is at the forefront of the mainstream introduction of solar power into people's homes.
This is an exciting time for the building industry and I am pleased we have been able to use our expertise to create a tailored solution for a technology that has to stand up to some fairly rugged environments during the building phase".
Chris added: "The continuing development of the packaging side of the Scott Timber Group is giving us the ability to service all the logistics needs of our customers.
This gives customers savings by not having to contract with additional suppliers and peace of mind as they will experience the same efficient, tailored service.".
