George Hill, leading manufacturer of specialist packaging, will form a key element in Scott Timber's diversification strategy.

GROWTH IS CHILD'S PLAY FOR SPECIALIST PACKAGING COMPANY A company that started out making toy prams is on track to become the UK's leading manufacturer of specialist packaging after being acquired by the Scott Timber Group George Hill in Wolverhampton joined Scott Timber as part of the Group's purchase of the Hambrook Group in October 2005

The company now comes under the auspices of Scott Packaging - the Group's dedicated packaging arm.

With a history going back to 1868, when the company initially made toy prams, George Hill has been manufacturing packaging since the Second World War.

From its base in Wolverhampton, the company has grown to a turnover of approximately £3.5 million and a staff of 46.

It has established a highly specialised operation, manufacturing heavy-duty packaging using timber, plywood and corrugated cardboard.

Currently 95% of George Hill's business is done within a 50-miles radius of its factory but this is set to expand, and turnover increase, as the company gains access to a UK-wide customer base through the promotion initiatives led by Scott Packaging.

It is projected that within five years the turnover of George Hill could soar to more than £6 million as the company sets its sights on grabbing a substantial share of the heavy-duty packaging market.

Boasting over 200 customers and prestigious clients in the automotive and aerospace industries, George Hill will form a key element in Scott Timber's diversification strategy.

Having grown to be the largest pallet manufacturer in Europe with 14 sites in the UK, Scott Timber is fast establishing itself as a complete logistics solutions provider.

Having transformed the pallet manufacturing industry, Scott Timber is now setting its sights on packaging with George Hill complementing the activities of Scott Packaging.

Customers will now be able to access an unrivalled range of in-house and bought-in packaging solutions.

John Kench, Director and General Manager of George Hill, said: "We are all very excited about the challenge ahead".

"Our market is highly specialised but there is growing demand for heavy-duty packaging, as more and more companies look to the export markets for their own growth".

"Our products are used to export specialised components and I would say around 80% of what we produce goes out as export business".

"Having access to a UK-wide network of customers is a huge opportunity, both for Scott Timber and George Hill".

"By working closely with Scott Packaging we are in an excellent position to give customers an enhanced service by setting new standards of innovation, customer service and efficiency savings.".
