Hears Former Falklands Governor Speak Former Governor of the Falkland Islands, Sir Rex Hunt, will visit SCI (Society of Chemical Industry) on 19 February 2004 to give an introductory talk before the free meeting Hydrophobic Cements in London's Belgrave Square.
Sir Rex was in the Falklands in 1982 when the war began and was afterwards reinstated as Governor when the fighting was over.
He presided over the massive construction that subsequently took place and was involved in rebuilding the Mount Pleasant Airport, extending the runway and building military installations nearby.
This construction involved using concrete made with a hydrophobic Portland cement manufactured in the UK under a Ministry of Defence Contract at the time.
Hydrophobic Portland cements have been favoured in conditions that arise in hostile climates or in humid conditions.
The cement particles are coated with a hydrophobic agent to ensure a high level of protection against premature hydration and aeration from atmospheric moisture, rain, snow and carbon dioxide.
Test procedures, uses and future possibilities for hydrophobic cements will be discussed.
