Swish starts up its new experimental line

A Swish Building Products product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team May 30, 2007

Extrusion line enables Swish to develop new materials and tooling improvements without interruption to production and therefore without threat to customer service.

As all experimentation will take place on this extrusion line, any of the variables that would be introduced by the differences in condition between lines used for production will be eliminated, and will not influence trial results.

This will be particularly important for the developing of more reliable second generation Calcium Zinc formulations which are a key part of the Swish strategy.

The experimental line has either a 90mm or 107mm twin screw extruder dependant on the experimental requirement, and is located in the new Swish factory where the stability of the new water cooling and compressed air services can also contribute to experimental accuracy.

Swish Process Improvement Manager Dr Ian Surry comments, "It is unusual for companies in this industry to invest so heavily in equipment for development purposes, but it's essential, given the growing pressure to develop materials with a greater content of recycled post consumer waste".

"Our parent group, Epwin, is increasing its investment in waste recycling, and at Swish we are closing the loop by finding ways to use the materials made available".

"Its an interesting technical challenge".
