Low-cost signal processing

A Synectic Design product story

The SY027 signal converter offers low-cost signal processing and is useful for many industrial manufacturing applications.

The SY027 signal converter is a unit that is available in a variety of forms to perform some signal conversion/processing functions.

It offers low-cost signal processing and is useful for many industrial manufacturing applications.

The SY027 is available in three forms: PSR - a pulse slitter relay output signal converter; PTI - a pulse splitter opto isolator signal converter and TRIP - dual relay 4-20mA signal converter.

The PSR and PTI units are pulse splitters used to produce two output signals from one input.

The PSR activates two relays where only one would previously have been operated.

It accepts an input pulse within the range of 0 to 50Hz which is generally via a reed switch.

This is useful for large batching processes where for example multiple hoppers of the same material are fed into a mixer.

The PTI will receive one signal from i.e a flowmeter and create two electrically isolated signals identical to the input signal.

The unit accepts its input pulse within the range of 0.1Hz to 1kHz which is generally via an OPTO coupler.

In this case two signals can be sent to different types of units, for example one signal can go to a batch controller while the other can be sent to a data logger.

Other output devices include: PLCs, batch totalisers, DAQ units or rate meters etc.

The TRIP is essentially a high and low level detector.

It can be used as a simple batching system where a low level switch in a tank operates a pump and a high level switch stops the pump.

The unit accepts input in the form of a 4-20mA signal (10 Ohms), with a similar output for the high and low conditions.

This version can also be linked to an SY018 amplifier so that the output signals can be fed directly into a DAQ unit to enable easy control of valves on hoppers etc.

A major benefit of this system is that as it only uses a low power supply it can still operate even during a power cut, but also offers an excellent safety feature as no tanks will overflow in the event of a power failure as a high level will be detected and valves shut.

A loadcell and pressure transducer version of this unit is available named the SY028.

The pulse splitting units were originally design for an MOD requirement, but have been adapted for various industrial applications.

The TRIP unit has previously been used by Ward Building Components (part of the Kingspan Group) for the filling of a variety of storage tanks.

All of the units can be powered by a supply within the range of 7V to 30Vdc.

Connections are simple rising clamp terminals and all units are supplied in a moulded grey flame resistant polyamide casing, on a Din rail mounting.

As the SY027 is a very simple product the only option offered with it is a mains powered feature.
