SpeedDeck captures energy efficiency all year

A SpeedDeck Building Systems product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 13, 2008

SpeedDeck introduces an innovative new steel facing to its products which will improve energy efficiency in both summer and winter, helping buildings comply with Part L of the new building regulations

Dobel Energy, the new steel facing from SSAB, can now be specified as a part of any SpeedDeck product.

This new technology deals with both NIR and IR radiation (NIR - Near Infra Red radiation is short wave e.g comes from the Sun, IR - Thermal Infra Red radiation is long wave e.g comes from human bodies and heating radiators).

Dobel Energy acts as a heat shield by reflecting sunlight externally preventing excessive heat build up and as a heat reflector/thermal barrier internally, conserving energy in winter and reducing the need for cooling in summer.

Through this process, Dobel Energy provides a double saving over traditional insulation as it reduces the need for internal cooling as well as heating as well as reducing the 'heat island' effect.

SSAB tested this new technology by constructing test houses, and monitoring their energy use under normal weather conditions over the course of two years.

SSAB measured passive temperature within the test houses, energy consumed heating the houses and energy consumed using air conditioning units.

The results demonstrated a 5% energy saving over the course of a year compared to using a traditional steel coating, savings which can be backed up by SSAB and SERC (Solar Energy Research Centre).

In addition to the thermal benefits gained in the building's interior, the life cycle of the coating is actually extended by its reflective qualities reducing extreme heating and cooling over a prolonged period of time.

Dobel Energy can be included in all SpeedDeck systems including SpeedRoof-Total, SpeedDeck's all inclusive twin skin roofing system.

This structure includes all components of the SpeedRoof secret-fix system, delivery to site and if required, a full system warranty for the complete roof installation, making it simple to price, specify and order.

SpeedDeck is introducing two new Vitesse products to give 'U' values of 0.3 W/mK and 0.25 W/mK.

These panels, with Dobel Energy facings, give Specifiers and Clients confidence of ongoing lower energy costs.

"The energy efficiency requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations can most easily be addressed through preserving the energy already generated within the building, and lowering energy use", comments David Lowe, Technical Director for SpeedDeck: "SpeedDeck products that incorporate Dobel Energy are a large step towards optimising the efficiency of a building, helping to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of part L".
