Symphony gets 'in sink' with waste
Kitchen expert Symphony team up with world leading food waste disposers InSinkErator - part of Emerson Electric - to supply waste disposers across the public and private housing sectors.
As latest figures show that some 6.7 million tones of food is thrown away by UK households every year, kitchen expert Symphony has teamed up with world leading food waste disposers InSinkErator - part of Emerson Electric - to supply units across the public and private housing sectors.
Designed to meet increasing demand from the market to help housebuilders achieve stringent recycling and EcoHomes targets, the waste disposers also aim to help reduce the cost to taxpayers of collecting and transporting rubbish thrown away in bins: estimated at GBP1.6 billion a year.
Symphony's Building Division Marketing Manager Kathleen Lyon says: "The units deliver some 20% reduction in household waste and are proving extremely popular with developers, particularly for new-build apartments where space for waste disposal is often at a premium".
"Our customers are telling us that food waste disposers are just as important as other kitchen appliances.
They can instantly lift the specification of a kitchen".
"Ashley Munden, Sales and Marketing Director for InSinkErator comments: "The environment is a crucial concern for everyone and managing household waste more effectively is a key part of creating a sustainable future".
""One way in which housebuilders can positively influence this is by installing a food waste disposer in each new home, reducing that household's waste by almost 20 per cent and ultimately cutting the volume that ends up going to landfill".
"Working with Symphony we offer a wide range of models suitable for a diverse selection of builds".
InSinkErator food waste disposers are the best selling world brand in a market which is increasingly focused on environmental management and sustainability.
The facts show:.
* 6.7 million tonnes of food is thrown away by UK households every year.
* 80% of household waste could be reused or recycled.
* Food waste in landfill also produces methane, which is 21 times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide and a major contributor to climate change.
* The cost to the taxpayer of collecting and transporting rubbish thrown away in bins, including food waste, has been estimated at GBP1.6 billion a year.
* Food waste from disposers is recycled into soil conditioner and the resulting bio gas can be used to generate non-fossil electricity.
* The cost of electricity to run a food waste disposer is typically less than 0.2p per person per day and the extra water it uses equates to one toilet flush.
By 2020, the UK is targeted with reducing the amount of biodegradable waste in landfill sites by 35% of 1995 levels.
The British Standards Institution has included the use of food waste disposers in its code of practice for all new construction projects.
