Glazed System For The Stars
Alco Beldan have completed an installation at a recently renovated property in North London which used to be the home of the golden couple Lulu and the late Maurice Gibb.
The steel window specialist has been selected by Sir Robert McAlpine as a package contractor/supply chain partner for the work on the East Stand of what is to be known as Highbury Square, a high quality residential development.
The company is tasked with repairing and re-glazing close to 200 original frames, as well as with undertaking the fabrication of another 120 new windows, in an authentic style.
For this 'replica refurbishment' element of its contract, Steel Window Service and Supplies is to employ W20 system sections to match the old Universal Suite, enabling the fenestration pattern, of mainly 'marginal pane' pivoting lights, to be enhanced with modern draught-stripping, 16 mm double glazing and a factory applied polyester powder paint finish in 'Gunners Red'.
Crucially, more thermally efficient, 14 mm double glazed units will also be introduced into the original frames after they have been removed to the company's north London workshop for cleaning, repair and corrosion protection.
The replacement glazing will be accompanied by the provision of new glazing bars and matching ironmongery.
The engineer at Sir Robert McAlpine responsible for Steel Window Service and Supplies' element of the contract, Stephen Chan, comments: "Back in 2006 we contacted the company regarding the feasibility of refurbishing the windows in the listed facade".
"In the first instance they presented us with the report and then responded with a quotation for carrying out the necessary work".
"We were confident enough to give the go-ahead and the contract is now getting under way".
The repair work has been made more complicated by the structural requirement to utilise an elaborate facade retention system, featuring scaffold sections inserted through window openings.
