The National Gallery of Scotland's roof refurbishment completed by Miller Roofing using Sarnafil single ply system, has won a National Federation of Roofing Contractors award.

Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, the Gallery is home to a wealth of fine Western art ranging from the Middle Ages to the late nineteenth century and includes the National Collection of Scottish art.

With its original roof failing, the National Galleries of Scotland contracted Miller to carry out the refurbishment across the three interconnected buildings' roofs that make up the Gallery complex over a three-year period.

The company's David Thomson says that the team had to contend with the Gallery's busy city centre location and status as a Historic Scotland Category A-listed building in order to seamlessly install the Sarnafil system - a triumph recognised by its winning the prestigious Single Ply prize at the recent National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Excellence in Roofing Awards.

"Because it's a Category A-listed building, the Gallery's roof required an extraordinary amount of detailing due to the shape of the historic stonework features," David reveals.

"A lot of the natural light for the exhibits is also provided by major architectural glazed units on the roof, which meant much of the detailing works were carried out in awkward areas with minimal working space".

"Our operatives were in weekly contact with Sarnafil's technical department to discuss and resolve detailing issues and we are extremely proud of the workmanship they achieved in spite of these challenges".
