Sto decorative exterior and interior coatings used for a high specification new restaurant in Peterborough, East Midlands.

During the 'New Town' expansion of the 1970's and 1980's Peterborough, in the east Midlands, emerged as a major regional centre and in recent times has blossomed into a vibrant, multi-cultural city One recent development that has created a lot of interest is the city's newest and trendiest restaurant - The Toho

This sophisticated, two level, 400 seater Chinese restaurant, with a conference and function room upstairs offers a remarkable 30 page menu to choose from and has been described in reviews as being "a gem of a place where you are guaranteed to enjoy the total oriental and cocktail experience".

As if to endorse this the lunchtime custom is made up of predominantly Chinese families and Chinese business people.

The Toho (which means 'beautiful'), has transformed the empty building shell that previously stood in this part of Peterborough's New Road area.

It is the concept of four local businessmen who wanted to style a really individualistic restaurant in the area, of the type you would normally find only in the larger cities.

The initial discussions with Sto Ltd focused on the outside of the building - a decorative facade.

But once it became clear that an equally exciting range of interior range finishes was also available, the project took on a whole new dimension.

Make a good first impression Making a favourable first impression is important for any business and this is particularly true of the restaurant sector.

The management team at The Toho wanted to let its clientele know from the outset that they were coming somewhere special and after discussing the possibilities with Sto Ltd, decided to create a natural polished slate finish for the facade.

First Sto Verotec boards were fixed to timber batons attached to the original blockwork substrate of the building, with a slight air gap left to allow the substrate to 'breathe'.

StoRend Flex, a specialist anti-crack, thin coat render system designed specifically for use on existing rendered surfaces or external wall boards was used.

The boards were then coated with StoElasto reinforcing plaster, which has StoGlass Fibre Mesh embedded to provide a strong protective covering for the boards.

Two coats of StoLevell Deco, an organically bound plaster, were then applied over the Sto-RFP.

To achieve the required natural polished slate appearance the StoLevell Deco was tinted a deep grey/blue colour and then finished with a grey/blue wash of StoLook Metallic to emphasise the slate look.

This is a dispersion coating, containing metal granules to achieve the genuine metallic look and is equally effective on rough or smooth surfaces.

The highest quality materials are used in the manufacturing process for all the elements in the build-up and the result is a render system up to fifteen times more crack resistant than conventional modified render systems.

It is through coloured in a choice of 800 colours and also maintenance free and offers complete protection from driving rain, yet remains vapour permeable.

The dramatic slate finish effect has been created at the front and back of the restaurant and makes a very favourable first impression indeed, particularly when seen glinting in the sunlight.

Come inside and be amazed.

The interior of the restaurant could almost be a showroom for the interiors range from Sto.

Practically every wall has a StoColor Latex 4000 finish.

In the main restaurant the slate theme continues, real slate this time and dark furniture, so the wall colours carefully chosen to complement this are burgundy and two different tones of orange.

In the toilets there is a baby blue finish for the men and natural earth green for ladies.

StoColor Latex 4000 is a tough, scrubbable, low emission, solvent and plasticizer free environmentally friendly paint with good covering power.

It is ideal for high traffic environments as it is very scuff resistant, but has a flexible structure and can be over painted many times without turning brittle or flaking.

Around the bar area StoLook Metallic comes into its own.

There is a lot of lighting in the bar area - wall uplighters, hanging lights and pin spots set into black timber beams - and the metallic finish subtly enhances the whole effect.

For further contrast, two walls in the restaurant are finished with StoLook Veneziano Classico, to complement the StoLook Metallic around the bar area and on the large wall behind reception.

StoLook Veneziano is one of the lime based polished plasters from the Sto 'Linea di Calce' range which is available in a number of different finishes and can be applied to suit a contemporary or antique design theme.

Linea di Calce offers a range of colourful, extensive decorative, polished plasters, which have been inspired by traditional Italian design techniques resulting in desirable modern architecturally interesting finishes.

The raw materials used to create the different products in this environmentally friendly range are purely marble, lime, and water.

These products were already known as building and decorative materials in ancient Greece and Egypt.

However, in the most recent past, the use of these materials have been developed and refined in Italy, where you will find the home of the Carrara marble in the north of the country.

However the Linea di Calce range from Sto represents a continuation of this tradition offering unique design variations.

At The Toho, a Classico two-tone oxide with a creamy yellow appearance is used to match the similar coloured floor in that part of the restaurant.

The StoLook Veneziano Classico is a smooth extremely hard wearing polished plaster available in 20 standard natural marble colours and in this application has wax wash finish to give the appearance of natural stone.

Perhaps the earlier restaurant review should be amended to read "a gem of a place where you are guaranteed to enjoy the total oriental and Sto experience".
