New Sto interior products create understated, exclusive look, for the UK's only Maybach Mercedes-Benz showroom.

Portman Square, just to the north of Oxford Street, is one of London's most prestigious locations and it seems entirely appropriate to find it home to the new flagship showroom for Mercedes-Benz Sitting imposingly at the junction with Wigmore Street, the full title of the new showroom is Maybach Mercedes-Benz, bringing together as it does, the Maybach, one of the world's most exclusive limousines (a vehicle for which you shouldn't anticipate getting much change out of £300,000) and the world's oldest automobile brand, Mercedes-Benz

This is the only outlet in the UK to offer the Maybach and one of only twenty five worldwide.

Rather impressively, Sto has been awarded the contract to refurbish all Mercedes dealerships, showrooms and truck depots throughout the world.

To ensure consistency of appearance and create a strong international branding presence, StoDesign in Germany have established a corporate colour scheme as a benchmark against which local design houses should plan their approach for any Mercedes setting.

There were two floor levels to be considered at the Wigmore Street premises, a ground floor showroom/administrative area and the exclusive Maybach lounge on the lower ground floor.

The consultants responsible for detailing this particular interior, Kinnersley Kent Design, opted for a combination of finishes from the new Sto interior products range - StoLook Marmorino, from the Linea di Calce Collection and StoD?cor Prim from the recently launched StoD?cor interior plaster systems range.

StoColor Crylan Paint was also used.

A stunning marble-like surface.

A pure mineral product, consisting of ground lime and high quality marble powder, StoLook Marmorino is based on the early Roman technique of marbling, but Sto have gone further and developed it so the lime elements contained in the marble powder are directly compacted under pressure to create a smooth polished glaze, resulting in a stunning marble-like appearance.

The product is available in a wide choice of colours and a whole variety of effects can be achieved through the use of stencils, or different colours and finishes, as it is being applied.

If StoLook Wax is added to the finished product an extremely high gloss is achieved which improves its stain resistant properties even further.

StoLook Marmorino can be used on flat or curved surfaces and the product is applied to the wall in several layers, similar to conventional plastering.

Skilful use of a hardened stainless marmorino trowel, brings out the unique marble effect and the final coat is then compacted by applying gentle pressure with a smoothing tool, resulting in the high-gloss finish.

StoLook Marmorino Classico in Mercedes blue, features on the walls adjoining the stairs leading down to the Maybach lounge and it is used again in the lounge itself, this time in cream and black.

Contrast adds exclusivity to the lounge area.

For added sophistication, StoD?cor Prim, also in cream and black, has been applied over selected parts of the lounge area, to provide a contrast with the glazed StoLook Marmorino finish.

StoD?cor Prim is a low-cost, through-coloured acrylic plaster system with a decorative topcoat finish, which can be applied straight on to newly boarded walls.

It is a pure acrylic, cement-free, plaster topcoat and, being solvent and emission free, offers a safe environment for both installer and client.

As with all StoDecor Interior plaster systems available in the new range, StoD?cor Prim has advantages for both client and designer.

It is available in 800 colours from the StoColor System and offers a textured, maintenance-free, extremely resistant finish, which is ideal in high traffic areas such as showrooms and offices.

Making a feature of the pillars.

The ground floor showroom and administration area has a number of support pillars and Kinnersley Kent Design has made a feature of these by using StoColor Crylan Paint, in Mercedes yellow.

StoColor Crylan is actually an external acrylic-based paint, which makes it very resilient and ideal for internal high-traffic areas.

The paint can be easily applied by spray, brush or roller and is non-toxic, plasticiser free with no volatile organic compounds.

As with StoD?cor Prim, it is also available in 800 colours from the StoColor System.

Manager Stewart Walker observes: "Striking the right balance with the interior appearance and atmosphere of the outlet was quite a difficult task.

Although related.

There are effectively two brands on sale, Mercedes-Benz and the Maybach.

We needed to achieve a sophisticated ambience throughout the dealership, but in the Maybach lounge particularly there really was a need for understated exclusivity.

I feel that the tones and textures of the Sto products used here have really helped us achieve that".
