WRAP projects green pavement technology
Specification trials are now underway to test a new kind of green pavement technology, used to create foundation layers of modern road surfaces.
Since then, further surfacing and resurfacing contracts have been completed in Wolverhampton and Newcastle under Lyme and Tarmac has just been awarded a GBP400,000 resurfacing contract at Quibell Park Velodrome in Scunthorpe, which gets underway in September.
Made from bituminous asphalt, the innovative surfacing solution contains polymers that slow the time it takes to set, to enable the product to be carefully laid on a banked or shaped surface.
Once set, the polymers add to the durability of the surface and the fine aggregates used ensure a smooth, high performance finish.
In order to lay the product on a banked cycle track, at an angle of 24 degrees, Tarmac uses a specially adapted mobile plant system.
In developing its surfacing solution for velodromes, Tarmac worked closely with British Cycling to ensure the specification of the end product would meet their requirements.
David Cockram at British Cycling, comments: "In the past most tarmac velodrome surfaces were hand-laid in radial segments with regular joints between.
Tarmac's new method of machine-laying the material gives a superfast finish which compares very well with indoor tracks such as Manchester and Newport.
"The Newcastle under Lyme track was one of the first velodromes to feature the new surface.
It was used as a training venue by our sprinters before the Athens Olympics and by our National Junior Squads in preparation for the recent European and World Championships, where we were very successful.
The track has also been used as a major training venue by British Cycling's squad of disabled riders in their preparation for the European Disability Championships and the Cerebral Palsy World Games.
Our combined medal haul from these championships is around 30 and there is no doubt that Tarmac Mastertrack has played a significant role in preparing our riders for international competition".
The innovative laying techniques, developed for use in velodromes, have enabled Tarmac to develop new solutions for a wide range of specialist surfacing contracts.
For example, the technique has been applied in the construction of parabolic bank tracks for the automotive industry and v-shaped drainage channels for use in motorway reservations.
Richard Beal, senior contracts manager, Tarmac , comments: "Tarmac Mastertrack is a high performance solution, which has been developed to meet the precise requirements of the sports cyclists.
In developing it we have found that this specialist solution is applicable to a wide range of sporting and test tracks".
Demonstrating this expertise and tailor-made approach, Tarmac is currently working on a new contract to surface the wet-handling test track for the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA).
For this solution, Tarmac has designed a unique surfacing solution with reduced skid resistance, to test the performance of tyres in wet weather conditions.
