Tarmac is leading an innovative renewal scheme at Hebden Bridge, to transform the heart of the town and to create a unique sun dial feature, providing a new focal point for visitors.

Tarmac is leading an innovative renewal scheme at Hebden Bridge - a popular beauty spot in West Yorkshire - to transform the heart of the town and to create a unique sun dial feature, providing a new focal point for visitors Working in partnership with Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, Tarmac is using more than 2,000 square metres of original materials, such as york flag stone and granite, to pave an existing pedestrianised area at St George's Square and to create a newly pedestrianised area at Bridge Gate, close to the town's medieval Packhorse Bridge

The giant sun dial, which is being constructed using paving stones will measure 8m across, complete with an inscription designed by a local stone mason.

Since starting work on the scheme last year, Tarmac has removed existing surface materials at Bridge Gate and laid duct runs for new street lighting.

The project team has also installed York Stone flagged footways, granite setts in various colours, granite kerbs, new drainage gullies and tree planters.

Additional work is being carried out to restore a car park area in the town centre, making space for an outdoor market and to create a stepped wave feature where visitors can sit and view the historic bridge over Hebden Water.

Craig Broadhead, Contracts Manager at Tarmac , said: "It is a pleasure to be involved in the design and delivery of this scheme which has been sensitively developed in partnership with Calderdale MBC to enhance the town centre area".

"In particular, the large stone sun dial which we will be installing will provide an attractive focal point." Richard Binks, Engineer at Calderdale MBC, said: "The scheme has been designed to improve access for visitors and local people, creating new spaces where people can meet and enjoy the town's shops and heritage".

"By using natural materials, which have been sourced locally, the restored areas will enhance the town centre and complement its existing architecture".

The first phase of the renewal scheme at Bridge Gate and St George's Square is nearing completion, with further enhancement works to follow.
