Most timber frame buildings in the UK are constructed from factory-assembled, open-framed, sheathed panels, although some manufacturers produce 'closed' panels where the insulation, services, vapour control layer, internal linings and possibly also the joinery and cladding, are all applied in the factory.

In either case the specifier need not be concerned with the specialist methods used in making the panels, but only with the quality of the final product and the materials used.

It is reasonable for a prospective or nominated manufacturer to provide, for inspection, a sample panel representative of the workmanship and materials to be expected in the contract.

The 8-page Wood Information Sheet covers every aspect of materials used, from structural framing, trussed rafters and sheathing, to insulation, wall ties, cladding and ceiling linings.

References to appropriate British and international standards are included.
