Bath University team win TRADA student prize

A TRADA Technology product story

TRADA Timber in Construction Student Prize has been awarded to a team from the University of Bath University.

The £1,000 TRADA Timber in Construction Student Prize has been awarded to a team from the University of Bath University, comprising both architectural and engineering under-graduates, for a design for a new west stand for the Bath Rugby Club.

Clayton Binkley, Gareth Lewis, Maurice King and James Renfrew's design incorporated a spectacular lamella roof structure and, said TRADA Technology Engineering and Product Services Manager Graeme Spencer, 'This entry would be considered an excellent feasibility submission by any practising architectural and engineering consultancy'.

A close runner up for the £500 second prize was Tom Makin of Oxford University for his project on timber gridshell structures.

Mr Spencer commended the project as 'an excellent technical submission, which included some scaled model load tests'.

The prize was launched last year purely for engineering, but said Mr Spencer, 'This year we wanted to encourage architectural and engineering students to join forces, to produce innovative entries that would sex up the use of timber in mainstream construction.

The 23 entries received this year has justified that decision'.

TRADA would like to thank the judges involved in this year's competition, Christopher Mettem (Senior Research Engineer) and Martin Milner (Managing Director of CCB Evolution), who along with Graeme Spencer undertook a 'long and difficult evaluation' before selecting the top two entries.

The prizes, sponsored by wood.for good, were presented at the Timber Show at Excel, London last month.

Entry forms for the 2007 award will shortly be available.
