TRADA advises on care of wood products on site

A TRADA Technology product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team May 20, 2008

TRADA Technology has revised its trouble-shooting Wood Information Sheet, 'Care of timber and wood-based products on building sites.

Bad handling and poorly organised storage are major causes of damage and wastage on site, which can amount to 10% and in extreme cases up to 20% of all materials supplied, according to Site-based Services Manager Andy Pitman.

The Wood Information Sheet warns that although timber is reasonably resilient and can withstand a certain amount of abuse without damage, a lack of care both before and during the construction process can adversely affect wood products.

Guidance is given on good practice to avoid problems such as:.

* Changes in moisture content because of excessive wetting or drying, which in turn can lead to subsequent swelling or shrinkage in situ.

* Distortion and physical damage.

* Deterioration such as splits, decay and discolouration.

* Corrosion of metal fastenings.
