The publication is based on a joint research project investigating lesser used species (LUS), carried out by TRADA in partnership with the Environment Agency and HR Wallingford.

The research identified five species - angelim vermelho, cupiuba, eveuss, okan and tali - which have been allocated to strength classes.

Additional funding for the research was provided by British Waterways, The Crown Estate, CETMEF (Centre d'Etudes Techniques Maritimes et Fluviales) and VolkerStevin.

Timber samples were provided as a contribution-in-kind by Ecochoice UK and Aitken and Howard , with Ecochoice UK providing expert knowledge on LUS, their commercial availability and performance.
