Health trusts floored by colours and textures
Marley Floors Eclipse PUR, Elite PUR and Safetred Dimension, Aqua and Universal were installed throughout two health care developments.
Marley Floors has been specified extensively on two projects, the first for Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust at Callington Road in Bristol for Rydon Construction and the second for Salisbury Health Care NHS Trust at Salisbury District Hospital, by Gleesons.
Marley Floors Eclipse PUR, Elite PUR and Safetred Dimension, Aqua and Universal were installed throughout the developments, including the washrooms, corridors, common rooms, restaurant, bathrooms, kitchens and waiting areas.
Callington Road Bristol falls under a scheme known as Moving On, the largest public art installation in the UK, where 36 artists were commissioned to create site specific artwork across five sites as part of a £72 million hospital development.
Artist Christopher Tipping was responsible for the design and development of some of the flooring.
His design was inspired by manmade and natural forms in landscape around the areas.
Working in conjunction with two other artists on the Callington Road site, he used Elite PUR and Eclipse PUR to reflect the natural colours and textures of the wooden furniture, also using a deer motif for aesthetic value throughout.
"This was made easy by the combination of colours available in the Elite and Eclipse ranges," he comments.
Phil Jones, contracts manager from installers, Gollop Flooring, agrees.
"This has been a positive project for all concerned from the ease of purchase to the installation of the Marley Floors materials.
This has forged a strong working relationship between Gollop Flooring and Rydon Construction whilst providing the end user with a functional, maintainable and attractive floor finish." Elite PUR and Eclipse PUR are both heavy-duty vinyl, easy to maintain because of a unique Pro-Tech polyurethane reinforcement providing even greater protection from scratching, scuffing and soiling.
A wide colour choice and ability to incorporate logos and design features lends itself perfectly to highly visual interior design projects.
For the new wing at Salisbury District Hospital, Tipping had to use materials that complemented the colour co-ordination of the interior decoration, which he also designed, where calming background colour provided a backdrop punctuated by dynamic contrasts and exclamations.
"Quiet and neutral tones for the field colours were offset by stronger focus colours for feature elements," he explains.
"The colour values are well balanced and help marry the floors with the rest of the building and the interior colour scheme." Rick Hawkins, Senior Contracts Manager of P.A Beveridge Flooring said 'The whole project was co-ordinated excellently by the main contractor and numerous sub contractors, this enabled a superb quality finish with regards to the laying of the Marley Floors products to be achieved.
The Safetred range provides a hardwearing slip resistant floorcovering with an extra tough surface and is regularly used in washrooms, canteens, workshops and laboratories.
The use of the Marley Floors ranges not only met the necessary safety requirements, but the scope of colours and textures helped to create a beautifully designed environment in keeping with the Moving On concept.
The Moving On program was funded by Avon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire Strategic Health Authority (AGW); AWP Charitable Funds; Ryhurst; Arts Council of Cornwall's Benevolent Fund and John Lewis of Bristol.
