Top marks for Topfloor estimator
Neil Finch, a senior estimator working for Tarmac Topfloor has been awarded the prestigious title of student of the year.
An aspiring civil engineer has been awarded the prestigious title of student of the year after becoming the first person in the history of Nottingham's New College to receive distinctions in every subject.
Neil Finch, a senior estimator working for Tarmac Topfloor and the winner of this year's award, is the first civil engineering student from the college to receive distinctions in every subject - the highest possible achievement at HNC level.
In addition to balancing his career, study and looking after his young daughter, Neil came top of the class after undertaking a number of additional assignments, with many stretching over 5000 words in length.
Originally from Mansfield, Neil (31) started his career working as a Draftsman for the East Midlands Electricity board.
Looking for fresh challenges, he decided to make the transition to the construction industry nearly four years ago, and joined Tarmac Topfloor's estimating team earlier this year.
Working as a senior estimator, Neil is responsible for providing the vital link between Topfloor's sales team and their customers.
Using many of the skills he acquired during the two-year HNC course, he is responsible for calculating the amount of structural flooring required for each individual enquiry, should that be for residential or commercial buildings.
Working as part of a team, Neil is responsible for servicing clients operating across London and the South East, specialising in Hollowcore flooring.
Commenting on his success Neil Finch said: "One of the biggest challenges I had during the course was making time for the coursework.
I realised that I wanted to find a job where I could combine both my skills and interests, which was why I chose to make the switch to the construction industry.
"When the college told me that I was the first civil engineering student to achieve distinctions in every subject and that I was going to be appointed the student of the year, I was thrilled, but I don't want to rest on my laurels and I'm planning to continue studying part-time.
The course was extremely useful as it gave me a useful insight into both the structure and application of engineering - something that I can apply to the work I currently undertake." Cheryl Beighton, Estimating Manager, Tarmac Topfloor said: "Neil's outstanding effort is exemplary and the success that he has achieved is well deserved, and has set a very high standard.
Neil's achievements have been exceptional and I'm confident that he will continue to succeed as he progresses onto the next stage of his career.".
