A Tamdown Group product story

Tamdown Group has linked up with one of the world's major home warranty and insurance organisations to enhance health and safety standards on construction sites.

Leading civil engineers, the Tamdown Group, which has offices in Braintree and Maidenhead, has linked up with one of the world's major home warranty and insurance organisations to enhance health and safety standards on construction sites.

Tamdown, which remediates and installs groundworks, infrastructure and concrete frames on some of the country's largest development sites, is working closely with NHBC (National House-Building Council), the UK's leading provider of health and safety services to the house-building industry.

NHBC carries out more than 500 on-site health and safety inspections every year for Tamdown.

Tamdown Director Chris Dorand said: "Tamdown is proud to be one of the very first professional subcontractors to be using the same inspection regime as its housing clients".

"NHBC is a very well respected independent verifier of both quality and safety in the residential development market and the fact we have appointed them to carry out our health and safety inspections demonstrates how open we are to our performance on site being monitored and critiqued".

He added: "We saw the huge benefits of this scheme very early on and so we extended NHBC's remit to cover all our non-housing sites as well." A team of between 30 and 40 NHBC inspectors carries out inspections on behalf of Tamdown annually and Tamdown's Health and Safety Manager, Paul Dyster cannot praise the scheme highly enough.

He said: "We have always displayed an open health and safety culture and working with NHBC has really enabled us to focus on improving specific areas".

"NHBC offer a great support structure and really engage with the guys on site".

"Before their inspector leaves the site, our contracts manager, construction director and safety manager receive an e-mailed report collating all the information gathered".

"We also we receive quarterly management reports detailing our statistical performance compared to the average of all NHBC clients which is extremely useful." According to latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2004/05, 32 per cent of all worker deaths were in the construction industry.

NHBC Health and Safety Manager Simon Mantle said: "Tamdown approached us and we are delighted to work in partnership with them".

"There is increasing pressure in the construction industry, as in other sectors, to be legally compliant in health and safety terms and Tamdown take a very pro-active and responsible approach, always stepping up to the mark".

"They set a great example to other sub-contractors.".
