Barbara Weiss designs eco affordable housing

A Barbara Weiss Architects product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Dec 16, 2009

Barbara Weiss Architects has been appointed to design the Hemstal Road affordable housing scheme, with sustainability as a key focus.

The Hemstal Road affordable housing scheme is set in an existing residential area.

Housing Association Origin won the appointment to build the new dwellings and in turn appointed Barbara Weiss Architects to design the scheme and obtain planning consent for the project.

Barbara Weiss says that there should not be a stigma attached to living in social or affordable housing, which should be just as well functioning, efficient and enjoyable as private housing.

Weiss ensured that the new homes at Hemstal Road have a high degree of natural light and privacy.

Weiss also ensured that the project met Secured By Design targets at planning stage.

Sustainability has been a key factor in the design and Weiss designed it to use A rated materials where possible, timber obtained from FSC or PEFC rated suppliers, non-polluting insulation, and highly efficient boilers, to achieve a very good Ecohomes rating at planning stage.

The project was a finalist in the CABEs Building for Life Award 2009.
