Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London announces phase three of his 100 public spaces programme at The Building Centre

Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, announced the next ten projects to receive support in the third phase in his programme aimed at improving 100 public spaces in London.

100 Public Spaces is a collaboration between the Mayor's Architecture + Urbanism Unit, Transport for London, the London Development Agency, London boroughs and other partners.

The aim of the programme is to create exemplary public spaces and establish a lasting legacy for a better quality of life for Londoners and its visitors.

He was speaking on the opening day of 'Civilizing Spaces: Improving London's Public Realm' an exhibition at the New London Architecture space in central London which tracks the progress of the first twenty four projects that have received support since 100 Public Spaces was launched in July 2002 as well as the next ten.

The Mayor said: "As London looks to 2012 to welcome the Olympics, we need to change the face of the entire city.

The public space projects and initiatives on display in this exhibition are the first steps in turning London into the world's most civilised, people friendly city, establishing a lasting legacy for a better quality of life for Londoners".

"By making better space, we can make a better city" Lord Rogers of Riverside, the Mayor's Chief Advisor on Architecture and Urbanism said: "I have always been passionate about London and urban life".

"But for too long London's public realm has been neglected and ignored".

"Now we have an opportunity to get things right by rebalancing the spaces of the city for people and cars".

"I believe that the street is the life blood of city life".

"When well designed, streets and public spaces bring people together in a civilised and safe environment".

"This is why the Mayor's 100 Public Spaces initiative is so critical to London".

"It will transform the way Londoners live, work and play in one of the world's greatest cities".

The new projects are:.

* A1/Highbury Corner.

* Bow Church.

* Erith Town Centre.

* Gants Hill.

* Kender Triangle/New Cross Gate.

* Potters Fields Park.

* The Romford Ring/North Street.

* Silvertown Quays/Pontoon Dock.

* Wembley Stadium station square.

* West India Quay .

The Mayor's Architecture and Urbanism Unit, led by Lord Rogers, will work on these projects with the London Development Agency, Transport for London, the London boroughs and other partners, to create exemplary public spaces for all Londoners to enjoy and in particular will advise on the design process, including agreeing project briefs and selecting the best design talent.
