It seems that the promoters of Crossrail have reached an understanding with the Department for Transport on the outlines of the new railway which is to span London from west to east.

It will reach as far west as Maidenhead and provide a regular service to Heathrow Airport, connecting with London's financial and business centres in the City and the Isle of Dogs The railway will also play a key role in the regeneration of the Thames Gateway and eventually extend eastwards to connect with the Channel Tunnel Rail Link at Ebbsfleet

In that form, Crossrail offers a wide range of transport advantages, at the same time promising improved conditions for the workaday flux of millions presently enduring overloaded suburban rail services and the congested London Underground.
