Integrated Team Vision is reality at the CIOB
Sir John Egan's 'Rethinking Construction' review of the construction industry called for integrated teams throughout the supply chain.
To encompass the various elements that make up the construction process the CIOB has developed a non-construction discipline (non-cognate) route into chartered membership that spans those management careers previously seen as 'non-construction' and benchmarks them against more 'traditional' positions.
The new 'non-cognate' route to MCIOB enables those employees in construction who have an acceptable non-construction honours degree or equivalent, and at least three years professional level experience in construction and a demonstrated commitment to the industry, to become chartered.
Twenty years ago the majority of the CIOB's 27,000 strong membership were involved in site-based management roles.
Today CIOB membership stands at over 42,000, with members in almost 100 countries, but less than 40% of this membership work now in site-based construction management positions.
Recent figures show that 675 members are already from the marketing and new business management sector.
Lyn Simons CIOB director of Member Services said, "This new route allows us to recognise the special expertise of the many different disciplines that make up the construction industry, while maintaining CIOB's reputation for high standards.
We can now provide a professional home for all those who manage the various elements of the construction process, and not just site-based management.
This means we truly represent the integrated team in accordance with constructing excellence principles.
It's now far more that rhetoric - its CIOB practice." Dr John Tookey a lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University and recent member of the CIOB through the non-cognate route commented, "As a non construction graduate leading a successful MSc in Construction Management and participating in the education of numerous cohorts of building and surveying undergraduates, I was presented with a massive paradox.
I could research and conceptualise the industry.
I could develop and manage the education of future construction professionals.
But I could never gain membership of the institution that my graduates would most likely join.
"The new CIOB non-cognate route offered me professional recognition, accreditation and credibility within my adopted industry by focussing on how I was contributing to that industry's development.".
